How Safe Are You in Your Home?

How Safe Are You in Your Home?

I have been reading about methods of in home security lately and wanted to share some of these ideas with you.

While the rate of at home burglaries is around 9-14%, the number of burglaries when a resident is actually home only makes up about 12% of all of these burglaries. Whether you are home or not when a potential burglary occurs you want to protect your home and your belongings. The best way to do this is to prevent a burglary from ever taking place.

 ·        Use and announce your in-home security system. This will deter thieves, especially petty thieves that are looking for a quick entrance and exit if they see that you have a security system in place.

 ·        Have pets that remain indoors at night and while you are gone. Although some thieves will consider dealing with pets, it is less likely that they will want to be bothered with having to distract pets. Your animals can also attract the attention of neighbors if you are not home, or can alert you if thieves attempt to come into the house while you are home. This gives you time to act.

 ·        Keep all windows and doors locked after dark, even in the summertime, especially those windows and doors on the first floor. Opened windows make easy access for burglars.

 ·        It is also best to have more than one set of locks on all doors that lead outside. This will help to make it more difficult for an intruder to simply break the lock.

 ·        Reconsider your outdoor landscape. If your landscape is filled with bushes, trees, or shadowy spots that would allow for a great hiding places while burglars try to figure out how to get in and out of your house, you might want to do some trimming and cutting to make your home less vulnerable to thieves.

 ·        Consider adding motion sensitive lights. This is especially important if you have shadowy spots in your yard that would be great hiding spots for a burglar. These lights are also meant to surprise the burglar and could easily scare them off.

Your home and your personal property is an important part of your life, so we want you to protect these belongings.

We hope you already have these tips in the works and if not that you will take them seriously to help protect your home from thieves!
