Car Travel Safety Tips
The holiday travel season is upon us!
For most of us, this means an opportunity to enjoy a
vacation, to get away from work and relax. For many of us, this also means a
lengthy ride in the car. For those who don't travel often, it is easy to forget
the dangers of traveling by car.
Even for those who do travel on a regular basis for business
or to visit loved ones, it is easy to become absorbed in the routine of
traveling and forget about the dangers of the open road.
Before you plan your next adventure, please keep in mind
these important car travel safety tips:
*Before leaving on a road trip, always have your car
serviced. Check the oil, wiper fluid, transmission fluid, tire pressure, and
tire tread.
*Travel during the daytime hours if at all possible. If you
are traveling at night, only stop in locations where there are plenty of other
people around. Avoid stopping at roadside stops late at night.
*Always carry a cell phone in case of an accident or the car
breaking down.
*Keep your gas tank at least halfway full at all times. This
will help you avoid running out of gasoline in a desolate area.
*Check the current road conditions for the states you will
be traveling through before leaving. All states will have a Department of
Transportation website that lets travelers know of any construction or closed
roads.
*Never pull over for a car other than a marked police
vehicle. As well, if your car is broken down on the side of the road and a
stranger approaches remain in the car and simply roll down the window slightly
but keep the door locked.
*Remember to always roll up the windows and lock the car
doors before leaving the car. If you are stopping at a hotel for the night or
for a meal, park the car where you can keep an eye on it and your possessions.
