Using Generators and Space Heaters:

I hope this email finds you staying safe and warm over the cold months of 2007!

I read an article recently on using generators and space heaters in the home. Whether you are using a space heater to stay warm during the cold winter months, or a generator during a spring storm or summer hurricane, there are several safety standards that you should always follow before using.

Remember that different brands of generators and space heaters might have different rules for running properly, but there are some basic rules that you should always follow, no matter what type of generator or space heater you have purchased:

*Proper Power Usage-In the midst of a storm when you are worried about keeping your family warm or keeping the refrigerator cold, you may not be focusing on how to accomplish this task. Unfortunately, many accidents have occurred because users will attempt to plug a generator directly into a power panel instead of directly into an appliance.

*Although it would be helpful to provide electricity to everything in the house at once, it really isn't safe. So, it is best to use the generator to plug into one appliance at a time, unless there are multi-cords for connection.

*Good Ventilation-Carbon monoxide is one of the most dangerous aspects of using space heaters and generators. Make sure you follow the manufacturer's directions when using either. With a generator, it is important to keep it outside where the air is circulating. It is best to keep it outside of the garage, as carbon monoxide can still build up in that space as well.

*Location-Remember to keep space heaters away from curtains, bedding, or any other flammable materials. It is also important to make sure that both generators and space heaters are on a flat surface. They are powered by fuel, so if the unit tips over, this could cause a fire or may even cause carbon monoxide gases to seep into the area.

I hope that you won't find yourself in the midst of a storm this year, but in case you do, please follow these tips to keep you and your loved ones safe.

Sincerely,
Joe N Mauro
