“Tis The Season To Be Careful”
November/December: The Most
Dangerous Months
November and December typically stand for colder days and holiday parties. They also stand for increased dangers to you and your loved ones.
Shopping, parties, vacations… it all adds up to danger on the roads this time of year. The dangers hold true both when you’re staying local and when you’re traveling.
Once serious danger this time of year is the increase in alcohol-related accidents during the holidays. According to Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), there were over 1300 alcohol-related automobile fatalities from November 24, 2007 and December 31, 2007. That number is approximately DOUBLE the number from the rest of the year (http://madd.org/stats/10419).
Here is a partial of things to be on the lookout for:
Dangerous Shoppers – As people are out shopping they tend to leave their common sense at home. Be extra cautious in and around shopping centers for drivers not paying attention to the road.
Deer Danger- All around the country this time of year the deer begin to come out. Be extra cautious when you’re traveling in wooded areas at dawn and at dusk, as deer often cross the road this time of the day.
Drunk Drivers- It should go without saying, but don’t get behind the wheel if you’ve had too much to drink. Call someone you trust for a ride. If you must drive yourself, wait a while for your alcohol level to drop below the legal limit, and it becomes safe to drive again.
You also need to be careful of other drivers who have had too much to drink. The most dangerous times are late at night and very early in the morning on weekends. If you see someone driving who may be impaired, call the local police.
Unfamiliar Weather- This one is true for you if you’re traveling out of town and for tourists who come to visit. No matter what the weather is, someone is likely to be unfamiliar driving in it. Be extra careful when the weather changes suddenly.
It’s easy to enjoy the holidays safely, just be extra careful when you get behind the wheel this season. For more information on drunk driving, please visit www.MADD.org.
