Car Jacking: Take it Serious
Car Jacking:
Take it Serious
I have been receiving email forwards lately from my own
loved ones about possible car jacking schemes that are becoming popular because
the victims are caught off guard. Whether or not these email forwards are 100%
true, car jacking is a reality we all need to be more aware of.
As you run into the grocery store to pick up a quick gallon
of milk before you head home from a long day of work, the last thing on your
mind is someone stealing your car, but that doesn't remove reality (especially
if you have your valuables already in the car, whether these valuables are just
your purse, your work laptop computer or even your little ones that you just
picked up from daycare).
Next time you head to the store, keep in mind some of these
important safety tips to keep yourself from becoming a carjacking victim:
* If you see a flyer on your car, do not put the car in park
and get out and remove the flyer from the car. Even if the flyer is obstructing
your view, simply drive away, get down the street and then stop the car and
remove the flyer. Many car jackers are using these flyers as a way to get car
owners to stop the car while the keys are still in the ignition and take off.
Remember that your purse, valuables and maybe even your children would also
still be in the car!
* Always lock your car doors and keep your windows rolled
up. Even if it is a nice spring day out, it is best to only roll your windows
down enough to let a little air in, but never enough that a car jacker could stick
their hand or a weapon into the car window.
* Although it is thoughtful to consider stopping for an
accident or a stranded motorist, these can also be ploys to get a victim to
pull over in a desolate area. Your best bet is to simply call for help and let
an on-patrol officer go out to help those involved in an accident or standing
near a stranded car.
* Park in well lit areas that are not obstructed from view
by bushes, buildings, dumpsters, large trucks, vans or nearby woods. These are
perfect hiding places for a potential car jacker.
* Try never to travel long distances alone at night and if
you do, only stop in populated areas, never at rest stops or on side streets.
If you are walking to your car leaving work late at night, always walk with
someone else.
Remember that we often forget about the potential for being
a car jacking victim as we go about our daily routine. You can help avoid this
possibility by following these simple tips.
Drive safe and be smart when on the roadways!
